News: Kinect takes its place in history and the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition.

Microsoft has been losing market share to Apple and, for the first time since the 90s, it was beat by Steve Job's company in quarterly revenue in 2010. The people at Guinness World Records, however, do have good news for the Redmond-based PC giant - and, no, it's not that they just saved CEO Steve Ballmer a bunch of money on his car insurance. Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360 outsold the iPhone and iPad at respective launches to become the "Fastest Selling Consumer Electronics Device."

From Kinect's November 4, 2010 launch date through the first 60 days ending on January 3, 2011, Microsoft managed to sell 8 million of the camera-based controller-free gizmo. That's an average of 133,333 units per day. Hence the reason you couldn't find them on store shelves during the holidays.

"The sales figures here speak for themselves," said Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor for Guinness World Records. "After extensive research, we can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

Kinect will appear in the next edition of the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition at the tail end of the year. You won't find it in the 2011 edition, though. The current book was printed before the record was broken. Of course, with release of Nintendo 3DS next week and the upcoming launch of Sony PSP2 in the fall, that record could be snatched away before it goes to print. Nintendo and Sony are eager to see that happen.
