News: EA and Maxis have released Update 10 which allows you to play in Single Player Mode without an internet connection.
Approximately one year after the commercial release, you can now play the new Sim City offline. The new single player mode is a part of “Update 10” that went live today and is available for you to download for free. Single player mode allows you to play Sim City anytime, anywhere, without the need of an active internet connection. You will, of course, need an internet connection to download the update, however, after that you can play the single player mode without having to log in to EA’s servers.
For those who enjoy playing Sim City online you will be happy to hear that part of the game has been untouched by this recent development. This includes multiplayer, Sim City World and Online Save Games. All of the previous DLC that you have downloaded will work with the new single player mode as well as continue to work when you go online. An Origin account is still required to play Sim City but you can put it in offline mode if you choose to do so.
As far as what is available in single player mode, well, pretty much everything. All region maps are available in single player mode, for example. It should be noted though that since single player mode does not require an internet connection that leaderboards, Citylog, Achievements, Friends List, Player Profile, the Region Wall and region invites are not available. The Global Market will be available in single player mode, however, prices will be fixed. If you want to transfer your file back and forth you won’t be able to either as EA has said single player and multiplayer are separate modes and regions cannot be transferred between modes.
It was said last year during Sim City’s launch that they would not be able to provide an offline mode without a significant effort. It would appear that Maxis and EA were correct as it took a year to get the mode that everyone wanted. EA has released a helpful FAQ for any other questions you might have, which you can see by clicking here. Will you play Sim City more often now that you aren’t forced to go online?
