News: Microsoft has revealed that you can now add music to your OneDrive account and then use Xbox Music to listen to your favorite songs on Xbox One.
Microsoft has revealed that you can now add your music to OneDrive and play them on your PC, phone and, most importantly, Xbox One. Anyone with a Microsoft account in select regions (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States) can add music to your OneDrive account and play it on Xbox Music. This is completely free and you do not need to have a music subscription to play your music from OneDrive. Those who do have a Music Pass subscription though will receive an additional 100 gb of storage space in OneDrive to save as much music as you want.
The absolutely easiest way to upload music is through the OneDrive App, however, you can do it through the website as well. The file formats that are supported include MP3, M4A (AAC) and WMA. Microsoft has also stated that you can have up to 50,000 songs saved on OneDrive at any given time. Keep in mind though that when you remove OneDrive songs from your Xbox Music Collection the files will also be deleted on OneDrive itself and the files will be moved to your OneDrive Recycle bin.
If you can’t seem to get this to work for you be sure that you have signed into xbox.com and accepted the Xbox Terms of Use. Once you do that you should be good to go. The devices that you can use to playback OneDrive content includes:
Windows 8.1 computer or tablet
Windows Phone 8.1 (using the Music app)
Xbox One
Xbox 360
Through a web browser on the Xbox Music website
Unfortunately after running some tests on Xbox One you still can’t have custom playlists while playing your favorite game. While I was listening to music in the Xbox One app as soon as I launched a game or another app the music would immediately stop playing. Hopefully one day we will be able to have background music like there was on the Xbox 360.
