News: Sony has revealed what the controller is going to look like when you pick up a PS5 later this year.

The PlayStation 5 is currently slated to be released Holiday 2020 but you don’t have to wait until then to check out the controller. Sony has just revealed the “DualSense” wireless controller which appears to be the controller we will all get when we pick up our PlayStation 5 console. They are beginning to ship this controller to developers who are going to be implementing the DualSense features into their PS5 games.

The DualShock 4 was by far the best controller Sony had designed up to that point and the new “DualSense” controller looks to build on that. One of the first things they added to this controller was haptic feedback, which can add a touch of realism to your gameplay experience. Microsoft added haptic feedback to Xbox One controllers and throughout the generation, it has been pretty cool “feeling” the difference when driving on the street as opposed to when driving on a gravel road in a game like Forza Horizon 4. That is just one example of course and it is fantastic that Sony is offering this for PlayStation gamers with PlayStation 5. This new PS5 controller also features adaptive triggers with the L2 and R2 buttons so that you get a better feeling of tension, such as pulling back and firing an arrow in a Tomb Raider game, for example.

Some other changes that gamers will see with the DualSense controller is that the angle of the hand triggers has changed slightly, along with potentially having a better grip. The battery life on the DualShock 4 has never been great, however, Sony is looking to change that with the DualSense controller with a better rechargeable battery and trying to make the overall controller feel a bit lighter.

Another change you will notice with this new controller is that the Share button is no longer there, however, there is a new Create button that will house the Share functionality. Unfortunately, Sony isn’t sharing any details about this new button right now other than saying they are trying to give gamers new ways to create and share content with the world. Another change is that Sony has revealed that the DualSense will have a built-in microphone which will make it easy to talk with friends without needing a headset. I’m curious how this will work if you have a lot of people in the room with you. Of course, you can also still use a headset if you want.

If you look at your DualShock 4 you’ll notice that the dominant color is black. That has changed with the DualSense controller as the dominant color seems to be white with some black on there. Looking at the pictures my rough estimate is probably 80% white, 20% black but I don’t know the exact figure.

To go along with this announcement Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, had this to say:

“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.”

What do you think of the new DualSense controller? Do you like the changes? Do you think they changed too much? Let us know in the comments below.
