News: A few extra weeks are needed to truly polish up the game and make sure it is as good as it can be upon release.

”Cyberpunk

Earlier today CD Projekt Red revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be delayed, but not for very long. Instead of being released in November once the next-gen consoles are out it will now be released on December 10. This is a delay of 21 days to make sure they can get everything done that they want to before everyone has the chance to play. Their statement, in its entirety, is below:

”Hey everyone,

Today, we’ve decided to move the release date of Cyberpunk 2077 by 21 days. The new release date is December 10th.

The biggest challenge for us right now is shipping the game on current-gen, next-gen, and PC at the same time, which requires us to prepare and test 9 versions of it (Xbox One/X, compatibility on Xbox Series X/S, PS4/Pro, compatibility on PS5, PC, Stadia)...while working from home. Since Cyberpunk 2077 evolved towards almost being a next-gen title somewhere along the way, we need to make sure everything works well and every version runs smoothly. We’re aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says that 21 days can make a difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do.

Some of you might also be wondering what these words mean in light of us saying we achieved gold master some time ago. Passing certification, or ‘going gold’ means the game is ready, can be completed, and has all content in it. But it doesn’t mean we stop working on it and raising the quality bar. On the contrary, this is the time where many improvements are being made which will then be distributed via a Day 0 patch. This is the time period we under calculated.

We feel we have an amazing game on our hands and are willing to make every decision, even the hardest ones, if it ultimately leads to you getting a video game you’ll fall in love with.

Yours,

Adam Badowski & Marcin Iwinski”

As they said, once a game goes gold, that doesn’t mean work on the game is finished. Development teams keep working on their title and try to put finishing touches during the process from when the game goes gold until it is in the hands of the player. That is why there is a Day 1 patch a lot of times. By the time release comes around the player the disc holds old code and so you have to download the update to make sure you have the most up to date version. If you purchase the digital version you download the most up to date version at that time but will still most likely have to download a Day 1 patch, generally speaking.

Also, while they didn’t come out and say it, I get the feeling that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are really holding this game. This is 100% speculation on my part but reading between the lines I think they would be much happier if they could just focus on the next generation of consoles and PC. In any event, you can now play the game on December 10th. That is still the launch window for the new consoles, however it is obviously not at the time of either console’s launch. Will you be picking up Cyberpunk 2077 when it launches? Tell us in the comments below.
