Reviews: A fun strategy game that has you building a transportation network from the ground up to reach a global scale.

”Fly

Over the holidays one game that kept our attention was Fly Corp from Kishmish Games. Fly Corp is one of those games that seems like it might be a simple game at first glance but it doesn’t take long until things get very complex and require a great deal of strategy if you hope to survive. It is up to you to develop a world wide transportation network to make sure that your passengers can get to their destination safely.

Fly Corp has four different modes for you to try out. The first is the tutorial where you can used to the ideals and mechanics of the game. The next is “Discover the World”. In this mode you work to build up your travel network by opening up new locations around the world. You also have a time limit as well. Here you will need to unlock a new territory every six minutes to be a success. During my time with this mode I found the time limit to be quite challenging at times, especially as you acquire more territories. Being able to juggle multiple airports in different territories around the world can become quite hectic as your network grows. Seeing what I could accomplish with these constraints was a good amount of fun, although it can be a bit overwhelming while you initially try to wrap your head around everything that is happening.

The next mode is the Scenario mode. This mode will give you different challenges with three different settings: Regular, Quick, and Extreme. The Regular selection starts in France where you will have to make your way across Europe. Once you successfully complete that the next scenario deals with a hurricane approaching the United States and with some cities getting flights canceled as a result, you have to come up with workarounds to try and get your passengers to their destinations quickly and safely. If you don’t have much time the “Quick” option is also available. The first one allows you to decide which territories you want to unlock in the world with the goal being earning a specific amount of money as quickly as possible. For those in for a big challenge, there is the “Extreme” tab as well. This starts with you trying to connect as many big cities as you can starting on the East Coast of the United States and going West to try and make your way to Hawaii and Alaska. If you get past that there is a scenario to manage airports in China. There will be a huge number of passengers to account for in this challenge and it made for quite a harrowing experience as I tried to balance everything.

The fourth and final mode is Free Play, which should be fairly self explanatory. You can play this mode without the stress the other modes bring to the table. There is no territory unlock timer here and the airports will not get overcrowded. You simply pick where you want to start and start building up your network. Make no mistake that things will still get intense as your network expands but I found Free Play to be a great mode to play while I was trying to get used to the game’s mechanics. Once I was comfortable with everything, then I went and tried some of the more serious challenges.

The controls for Fly Corp are fairly simple. I think this game is probably best played with a keyboard and mouse on a PC, but I spent my time with the Xbox Series X version playing with a controller. The game can be played with a controller just fine and you will still have a fun experience but this game was no doubt designed with a mouse and keyboard in mind. That said though I applaud the developers for bringing this game to console to have access to a bigger audience and if the game does well enough, perhaps we will see a sequel in the future that can build on this original concept.

Fly Corp also has a way to compete with other players using a high score table. You can earn points by playing the game and expanding your network. Doing things such as transporting passengers, unlocking more territories, and overall earning money will earn you points and if you do well enough, perhaps a spot on top of the leaderboard. I enjoyed this form of competition as it allowed me to compete with others while still being allowed to do my own thing regardless of the mode that I was playing.

Overall my time with Fly Corp was an enjoyable one. I suppose my one complaint is they could have done a better job adapting everything to a controller. This is a smaller studio though so I won’t really hold that against them too much. If we ever do see another one though, hopefully it will designed with consoles in mind a bit better. That said, this is a game that I recommend everyone check out. If you are a fan of strategy games made by independent studios be sure to give this one a look. If you are someone that likes to try a game before they buy it, there is a free demo on the Steam marketplace as well.
