PSP firmware update ahoy @ Gaming Target

News: Sony kicks the version number up a notch.

It's been known about for a little while now, but Sony has officially released the newest update to the PSP, bringing the system up to 2.70. Owners of the handheld can tap into their wireless connection to download the 18MB update right this instant.

This is mostly a minor update, but Sony has put in some things many have been hoping for. Here's the complete list of updates, straight from Sony:

You can now play Macromedia Flash content under [Internet Browser].

[Connection Settings] has been added under [Settings] in [Internet Browser].

You can now save content added under [RSS Channel] on a Memory Stick.

[Automatic] has been added as an option under [Rate] in [LocationFree Player].

[UMD Video L/R Button] has been added under [Video Settings] in [Settings]

You can now disable the channel skip feature of the L/R buttons.

A new file extension has been added to playable AAC formats.

[Simplified Chinese] and [Traditional Chinese] have been added as options under [System Language] in [Settings>System Settings].

[RSS Channel Settings] has been added under [Settings].

Most useful to this mix is the ability to play AAC music files - this means you can add songs ripped from the default iTunes format, though not music purchased from the music store itself.

Also take note that Flash support must be enabled in the System Settings menu of the XMB before it will work.

Though it's not mentioned, chances are this update also locks up the security flaw with Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories that allowed 2.60 users to run unsanctioned software on the system, along with any other possible exploits.
