News: Now with the option to play as a grumpy bastard

Ubisoft unveiled some extended gameplay footage for Assassin's Creed at E3 this week and showed off some of the game's coolest features. The environment in the demo was pretty familiar from earlier trailers, but here we got a better look at the interactivity possible between the player and the general village population. The demonstrator had the main character Altair strutting around with plenty of attitude, bumping into people and knocking their stuff on the ground. It was the people's reaction that made Assassin's Creed stand out in the crowdЧthey didn't just stand idly by letting the player have his way. They started getting agitated, which got attracted the attention of the guards, which got the player into hot water...

On the other hand, the player could choose to blend into the crowd as much as possible by mimicking their behavior. Altair can escape pursuit in this way, in addition to the usual hiding in dark corners. It's also possible to evade the guards by climbing walls, jumping from roof to roof, and basically being as acrobatic as possible. It's shaping up to be a combination stealth/platformer with some deadly hand-to-hand combat action. Anyone who's so much a s glanced a at trailer for this one knows that it is going to be one good looking game, with some amazing environments and characters with great martial arts moves.

Assassin's Creed will take the stealth genre to new levels by adding a more highly interactive world that allows Altair to scale walls and use the environment to his advantage. It will also include a detailed combat system to help him defend himself when detected.

The game is scheduled for release in Q4 2007. Gaming Target will keep you up to date on all future Assassin's Creed developments.
