News: VGChartz has crowned a new champion in the next-gen battle royale.
VGChartz.com, an independant site that tracks the worldwide sales numbers of all three next-generation has just issued a statement confirming that the Wii has passed the Xbox 360 in total worldwide sales.
The site, which uses samples of retailer data to extrapolate worldwide numbers, states that as of August 23 the Wii has sold 10.57 million consoles. The Xbox 360, which has been on sale a year longer, currently stands at 10.51 million consoles sold.
Sales are also broken down by region with the Wii selling 3.46 million in Japan, 4.24 million in America and 2.87 million in other regions. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 has sold 0.43 million in Japan, 6.75 million in America and 3.32 million in other regions.
The PlayStation 3 continues to sit in a distant third place with 4.32 million consoles sold worldwide.
While these numbers and placements will not mean anything in the long run of this console war, the sales success of the Wii is truly amazing and according to Nintendo, it makes the Wii the fastest selling system ever.
