Specials: What we loved from 2008.

Gamers have quite a bit to look forward to in 2009 with a ton of highly anticipated releases for every platform and every type of player. But we'll get to that soon. Right now, it's time to look back at all of the titles that made 2008 a great year. Especially since all of the big games of 2009 are still a few weeks away, at least.

So here are the 40 games from 2008 that the staff of Gaming Target chose as title we'll still be playing in 2009 and beyond.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Platform: PS3
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Kojima Productions
Release Date: June 12, 2008

Years in the making, the capper to Konami's Metal Gear Solid series was everything fans of the franchise could have hoped for. In setting a new cinematic standard for gaming, Hideo Kojima's masterpiece has also sparked more rumormongering than any other game. And if even Xbox 360 fanboys want to get their hands on MGS4, you know it's earned its greatness.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe
Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360
Publisher: Midway
Developer: Midway
Release Date: November 16, 2008

"Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is a solid fighter with good mechanics and a great story mode. It's one of those games that anyone can pick up and play, but it'll take some time to master a certain character. The lack of unlockables is killer, but the online play offers enough of a challenge that you'll be coming back, as least for a little while, after you finish all of the single-player modes. For the casual gamer, give MK vs DC a rental and see if you like it, but die-hard fighting fans shouldn't pass up this great entry to the MK franchise." - Jason Fanelli

N+
Platform: XBLA
Publisher: Metanet
Developer: Slick Entertainment
Release Date: February 20, 2008

A stick figure ninja runs around a small room dodging hazards and gun turrets in search of gold while funky music plays in the background. It sounds ridiculous doesn't it? It sounds ridiculous right up until you play it, and then you will be dedicated to mastering the way of the ninja.

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
Platform: DS
Publisher: Tecmo
Developer: Team Ninja
Release Date: March 25, 2008

"Although the game is a bit short (roughly six hours) Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword gives DS owners a chance to play something that is totally unique on their console: a fast-paced action game that would otherwise normally belong on the PSP. Thankfully, the game is on the DS and other than a few minor gripes with movement and attacks at around end-game, the game is wonderfully played. DS owners should not miss the opportunity to play this great game." - Jason Young

Patapon
Platform: PSP
Publisher: Sony
Developer: Sony
Release Date: February 26, 2008

"Patapon is a game that's hard to put down, yet very easy to throw down. There are many difficult levels in which you'll nearly break your PSP out of frustration. However, players who are determined and people who have natural rhythm will see this unique handheld title to УEarthend.Ф That's the name of the location where you lead a tribe of one-eyed, two-dimensional creatures as a drum-beating god." - Matt Swider
