News: CEO Bobby Kotick talks tough.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently spoke to The Times, a British newspaper, and revealed his company is considering dropping support for the PlayStation 3 and PSP. So if you want to play the next Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Call of Duty or Spider-Man game and all you own is a PS3, you might want read what he says very carefully.
According to Kotick, it's nothing personal. Instead, it's strictly business, and Activision's CEO says that games just sell better on the Wii and Xbox 360:
УI'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,Ф he says.
When asked what Sony could do about their current struggles in the video game market, Kotick dropped the bombshell about dropping support sometime in the next year or two...
УThey have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.Ф Ask when and he says: УWhen we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console Ч and the PSP [portable] too.Ф
There is precedence for this type of move, many publishers dropped support for the GameCube after it dropped into third place during the last console cycle.
