News: The original giant mech games get a reboot.
IGN has the exclusive news that a new game in the MechWarrior franchise is in development at Piranha Games and Smith & Tinker. The game, the first in th franchise since MechWarrior 4 was released in 2002, will be a complete reboot of the series instead of "MechWarrior 5." It currently has no publisher or release date, but Piranha and Smith & Tinker are developing the game for the PC and Xbox 360.
As the game is a reboot, it will include an entirely new storyline that takes places before all of the events of the previous games:
This new MechWarrior is set on the planet Deshler in the year 3015, and places players in the role of Adrian Khol, a wayward nobleman who prefers partying and shirking responsibility over his training and studies. However, when House Kurita launches a massive invasion to conquer Deshler, resulting in the death of his entire family, Khol discovers a purpose to fight for.
IGN has also posted a massive
six-page interview with Jordan Weisman, co-founder of Smith & Tinker and co-founder of FASA (the company that created the BattleTech universe that MechWarrior is based upon) and Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. In it, they go in-depth about what the new MechWarrior will offer, but their goal is to use the advances in computer technology over the years to create the most realistic giant mech game ever. There will also be a four co-op mode as well as a competetive multiplayer mode.
Finally, here's a first look at the game in action:
We'll have more soon.
