News: But where oh where is Ghostbusters or The Conduit?

The NPD Group has released their report on the bestselling games and consoles in June and Prototype proves that its finished product is the game to beat. Several years in development, the Xbox 360 version of the Radical-developed, Activision-published, open world game takes the top spot.

Meanwhile, fighting games continued to make their mark for the second straight month in a row with the Xbox 360 version of UFC 2009 Undisputed taking the second spot and Fight Night Round 4 debuting at number six (Xbox 360) and number seven (PS3). Exercise games made a big splash as well as EA Sports Active continues to sell well, landing two spots ahead of Wii Fit at number three. While not an "exercise game" per se, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii also made the top five, coming in at number four.

Speaking of Wii Fit, it continues its quest to topple the install base of the PlayStation 3 system. As of the end of June, Wii Fit has sold 7,636,400 copies while Sony has sold 7,909,600 PS3 consoles. Just 273,200 units separate the two as of today. If Wii Fit and the PS3 continue their current sales pace, Wii Fit (and the Wii Balance Board peripheral) will lay claim to a larger install base than the PS3 by the end of the Summer.

But it's almost more interesting to see what didn't make the cut this month than what did. For example, for the first time since it launched nearly three years ago, Wii Play is not in the top ten. Neither did The Conduit, High Voltage's highly anticipated first person shooter on the Wii. Another hugely anticipated game, Ghostbusters, couldn't crack the top ten even with versions appearing on six different platforms. Nor could Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen, which appeared on seven.

Here's the full list of the ten bestselling games in the month and the console sales numbers:

1. Prototype (Xbox 360) - 419,900
2. UFC 2009 Undisputed (Xbox 360) - 338,300
3. EA Sports Active (Wii) - 289,100
4. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (Wii) - 272,400

7. Fight Night Round 4 (PS3) - 210,300
8. Mario Kart Wii (Wii) - 202,100
9. Red Faction: Guerrilla (Xbox 360) - 199,400
10. Infamous (PS3) - 192,700

Console Sales Numbers
1. Nintendo DS - 766,500
2. Wii - 361,700
3. Xbox 360 - 240,600
4. PlayStation 3 - 164,700
