News: Capcom plans to give a gift to gamers to celebrate Mega Man 9's first birthday.
One year ago today, Capcom released
Mega Man 9 on the WiiWare service and ushered in a glorious era of "neo retro" games. As the first "new game in an old style", Mega Man 9 set the gold standard that future new old games such as
Gradius ReBirth and
Contra ReBirth would strive to emulate. But in that year, none of these games have been able to match Mega Man 9 for it's quality (both as a forgotten 8-bit game and as a new release) or for its pure fun. It is, without a doubt, one of the best games that 2008 had to offer.
So it's only fitting that Capcom is planning "
a celebration" for the game's first birthday. With the Tokyo Game Show officially kicking off tomorrow, now would be a great time to announce
Mega Man 10.
While that might be a bit of wishful thinking, Capcom has confirmed one thing they don't plan to talk about:
the final Mega Man 9 "secret".
We'll definitely have more soon.
UPDATE: Capcom has updated their Capcom-Unity blog with details on
the celebration. It seems that the company has held on to one of the NES cartridge-styled press kits and plans to give it away to the Capcom-Unity user who can create something that "shows how passionate you are about Mega Man".
