News: USA Today reveals the Nintendo DS to the world and includes plenty of details.

USA Today's Steve Kent has unveiled the first picture of the Nintendo DS. The two screened machine opens like a GBA SP, but it is wider to accomodate the game's second screen that sits between the control pad and the face buttons. The article goes on to explain more about what the DS can do and how it's being viewed as Nintendo's answer to Sony's PSP. The picture also shows a version of Mario Kart running on the DS, with the race on the top and a map of the track and the standings listed on the bottom. It's unknown whether this is an actual planned game or if it's just a mockup. Click the link for the full scoop, but here are a few highlights:

  • Each screen will be three inches and the bottom one will be a touchscreen that will allow a stylus to be used.
  • A demo Nintendo has planned for E3 will feature Baby Mario falling from the sky and players have to use the stylus to draw clouds to catch him.
  • The DS will play both DS games and Game Boy Advance games (and assumedly Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, but that's unconfirmed). A separate slot will be built in for the larger GBA games.
  • The DS will feature slightly more processing power than the Nintendo 64.
  • The DS will feature Bluetooth wireless capability for wireless multiplayer.
