Indigo Prophecy

News: David Cage talks about his adult-oriented game Heavy Rain.

Quantic Dream's David Cage spoke today at the Eurogamer Expo in London about his upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive Heavy Rain. Heavy Rain will be a mystery game where players will be searching for a serial killer known as The Origami Killer. Because of the its mature story, Cage refers to Heavy Rain as an "adult-orientated game" and used the Eurogamer Expo to expound further on what that means.

"When you are 18... You won't be shocked for the rest of your life because you saw nipples," Cage told the crowd.

That comment was likely in response to a scene in Heavy Rain where a mob boss forces a female character to remove her clothes. The scene very closely echoes the forced striptease scene in True Lies, albeit in a much more serious matter.

Cage defended his right to create these kinds of mature games (Cage and Quantic Dream were also responsible for 2005's Indigo Prophecy) by saying "As a game creator I have one very simple rule, everything is allowed, no limits, as long as it makes sense in the story and is not gratuitous."

But he's well aware that the media may not accept his vision of what a truly mature game can be, so he is calling on gamers to be ready in case the media gets a little out of hand...

"So Heavy Rain is so much not about sex and violence, it's about characters and emotions. Even if Fox News comes and plays the game and says it's about sex, the whole community of gamers, I'm sure, will stand up and throw stones at them. That's what I hope. I count on you guys."

I think it's interesting that even though Cage was speaking to a European crowd, he cited Fox News (an American network) as a possible media outlet that could have a problem with Heavy Rain's graphic content.

Heavy Rain is scheduled to be released on the PS3 in early 2010. We'll have more soon.
