Review: Now havesting "special" crops

Harvest Moon 64 has finally made its way from Japan to the United States. This long awaited game has had a following since its start on the good ol' SNES. Now you may be saying what is this game about is it just another follow up to Neil Young's Harvest (Moon) series? Of course not this is Harvest Moon the farm simulation for the Nintendo 64. Farm Simulation? What are you on boy that's not going to be any fun. That's where your wrong and here we go on a journey into the mystical and magical world of Harvest Moon 64 so sit back and prepare yourself for one of the best games for the Nintendo 64 to come out in its life.

The visuals of Harvest Moon are Sprites. Now I bet your saying Sprites isn't that a soft drink? No, Sir sprites are what came before Polygons and after Vectors. They are the creators of modern videogaming. Now back into the graphics. The game is made of all sprites but don't let this get you down. Natsume knows what its doing and these sprites take full advantage of the N64 and its capabilities to have a high number of sprites unlike other systems (*cough* Playstation *cough*). Lets move on.

As for the controls, they feel like they are close to perfect. I have no major problems with them except lining yourself up to do anything that requires making a straight line that usually took a little long to do but once you get everything set you wont have to worry about that. What's even better about Harvest Moon 64 is that instead of having a tool shed that you have to keep walking to to get tools or seeds you can carry them in your backpack a big improvement if you ask me.

Some of the best audio can be found in Harvest Moon 64, but be warned, you are going to get quite mad at the fall music. I did. Other than that the sounds are good the animal noises sound just like the real animals. The best music in the game would have to be the Spring theme its well done and goes with it.

Was I satisfied? Hell YEAH! This game is to damn good its addicting. The day I got it played a full year straight! Courting a girl to get her to marry you and help you on the farm is the hardest part. On the downside the game only lasts two years just like the SNES version. The GameBoy version you can play as many years as you feel necessary. On a side note in order to get a girl to marry you, you will need to have a kitchen. Just a quick tip from ol' Jeff your best gaming buddy.

Lastly, replay is in this game its varied a lot in my opinion. Being able to marry different woman having different animals die will change your game every time. If you want to "totally" complete I imagine you could do it by marrying all the girls in separate games why you would want to do this I don't know. However, if you do I give you my congrats.

Bottom Line
Being a sprite heavy games lets the N64 keep this title in its library of "Only for N64". Although this may be looked down upon by some gamers its something we Nintendo64 owners can keep our heads high about and just keep waiting for the next great game like Harvest Moon 64. With the N64 being killed by Dreamcast and Playstation this is the kind of title it needs. The question is will anyone notice it? Probably not. Will you notice? You should I highly recommend this game.
