News: And the DS may just have set a new single year sales record.
Nintendo has announced that, surprise surprise, a lot of people bought DS and Wii systems in December.
In a short sales report, the company has announced that the final month of the holiday shopping season saw sales of over three million for the Wii. As for the DS, Nintendo didn't reveal monthly sales figures, but they did say that the system has broken the calendar-year U.S. sales record for any console or handheld system. The previous yearly sales record was set by the Wii just last year, when it sold 10.17 million consoles.
Not only did Nintendo sell a lot of systems, but their games were very popular this December as well. The company announced that
New Super Mario Bros. has sold almost four million copies since its November 15 release.
While that won't be enough to surpass the Xbox 360 version of
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii will likely outsell the PS3 version, making Reggie Fils-Aime's sales prediction for Nintendo's flagship game partially true.
"The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family."
We'll have more December sales numbers when the NPD Group releases their monthly report on January 14.
