News: Mistwalker and Monolith have new RPGs in the works for the Wii.
Nintendo has unveiled the official website for their upcoming RPG The Last Story. Developed by Mistwalker, Nintendo will be bringing the game to the Wii for Japan in 2010. A North American release date has not been announced yet. The website is currently rather empty, with just the game's logo to keep us company:
As you can see, the game's logo and title are very similar to the
Final Fantasy franchise. This is unlikely to be a coincidence as Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the original Final Fantasy on the NES, is also the founder of Mistwalker. Will The Last Story resonate with gamers the way the Final Fantasy series does, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata certainly thinks so as he said Nintendo chose to publish the game to "[create] a new form of RPG by choosing the universal theme of human emotion."
Nintendo also announced
Xenoblade, a second RPG for Japan that's scheduled to be released in 2010. Xenoblade is in development at Monolith Soft and was previously known as Monado: Beginning of the World. According to Nintendo, the name change came about as a way to honor Monolith's work on the
Xenogears/Xenosaga series. It's currently unknown if the game has just approriated the Xeno prefix, or if it will have some connection to Monolith's four-game franchise.
We'll have more, hopefully including an American release date, soon.
