News: One theory on the next Spider-Man game...

After taking last year off, Activision executives have started talking up Spider-Man's return to video games in 2010. That talk will become something more solid in a few weeks as the cover to GamePro's May issue features a mention of something called Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

Subscribers will get all the details when the issue is mailed out to them next week, while it will be available on newsstands on April 6. But what exactly is Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions? I have a theory...

Back in 1998, the Spider-Man animated series came to a close with a two-part finale that dealt with the Spider Wars, a heavily modified version of the Clone Saga that featured six dimension-hopping Spider-Men (including Ben Reilly, the Scarlet Spider) trying to stop Carnage from destroying all reality.

Could this be what Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is all about? We won't know for sure until next week, as Spider-Man is not usually one to get involved in cross-dimensional shenanigans. Although there was also the Secret Wars, but I'm not sure that story could be considered a "Spider-Man" game.

There's also the possibility that Activision will team up with Sony Pictures to sow the storyline seeds for the planned 2012 Spider-Man film reboot. But considering the Shattered Dimensions subtitle and the film's focus on an Ultimate Spider-Man-styled Peter Parker in high school, this seems unlikely.

There's also the question of just who will develop the game as Activision shut down Spider-Man: Web of Shadows developer Shaba Games in 2009 and Treyarch is busy working on Call of Duty 7. Prototype developer Radical Entertainment was rumored to be working on the game, but nothing has been heard from them in a while. Still, they seem like the most likely candidate.

We'll have more soon.
