News: Not a Mortal Kombat 9 trailer, but it should be!

The Internet exploded yesterday when a trailer purporting to be for something called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth was uploaded to YouTube. Casting The Dark Knight's Michael Jai White as Jax and Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, the nearly eight-minute clip featured a very dark and gritty take on the fighting franchise. It was also made of pure awesome.

But according to Ms. Seven of Nine (via her Twitter account), it wasn't a live-action trailer for Mortal Kombat 9 or a first look at a new MK movie. Instead, it was an independent production from director Kevin Tancharoen (he did last year's Fame remake) to pitch Warner Bros. on his vision of a new Mortal Kombat film.

(Note to Warner Bros. executives: Hire this man!)

Here's what Ryan had to say about it in a series of tweets:

  • "WOW. I see it's been an interesting day while I was on set without internet access!"

  • "Okay, so... Mortal Kombat."

  • "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."

  • "More MK FAQs: I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB..."

  • "...(cont.) to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)"

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon didn't have much to say on his Twitter account yesterday, but this tweet was made almost directly after the Rebirth clip began making the rounds: "So, um.......whats new?"

Congratulations to the cast and crew that created Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, you've left Ed Boon practically speechless.

Warner Bros. has yet to comment, but once again I suggest they hire Tancharoen to direct the planned third Mortal Kombat movie as the man clearly knows what he's doing.

And if you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?
