News: Also, Scorpion has been confirmed as a playable character!

Mortal Kombat @ E3 2010: Fighter roster includes 26+ characters, DLC fighters coming

The new Mortal Kombat was one of the biggest hits of this year's E3. Shown behind closed doors to a select set of journalists, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon ripped down that curtain on the final day of the show by talking to GameSpot.

First and foremost, the video confirms Scorpion as a playable character. While there was little doubt the ninja would skip Mortal Kombat, his absence from the game's debut trailer was worrisome.

But he's back and he'll be joined by 25 of his closest friends as a brief shot of the game's character selection screen confirms that the final "standard" roster will include 26 characters. The screen also included a ? block, which in previous games was reserved for hidden characters. Opposite the ? block was a slot simply labeled "DLC," so it appears that this initial group of characters will be expanded after Mortal Kombat's Spring 2011 release. Of course, Ed Boon made similar claims about MK vs DC Universe, and no downloadable characters ever emerged for that game.

Finally, the video showcased the game's new Super Bar mechanic, which controls a player's ability to perform a Combo Breaker or enter X-Ray Mode (which looks very similar to Klose Kombat from MKvsDC).
