Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Written by John Scalzo  on July 20, 2010

News: The Power Rangers and the Constructicons are jealous at this super team.

Curt Schilling is a baseball player best known for the "bloody sock" game during the 2004 World Series.

Todd McFarlane is a comic book artist and writer who created Spawn.

R. A. Salvatore is a prolific and world-renowned fantasy writer.

Ken Rolston is an RPG developer who previously worked on the Elder Scrolls series.

This motley crew will come together to form a Voltron-like behemoth that will be responsible for the development of 38 Studios' Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. In the works for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and previously known as "Project Mercury," Reckoning will be published by Electronic Arts in the Fall of 2011.

Salvatore created the fantasy world of Amalur while McFarlane brought the land to life with his unique visual style. Rolston and his team at Big Huge Games will assist the main 38 Studios team, which was brought together by Schilling, who in addition to being one of the most feared pitchers of the last two decades is also a huge game nerd.

"In Reckoning, we started with Bob and Todd's exceptional Kingdoms of Amalur game setting and imagery," said Ken Rolston, Lead Designer at Big Huge Games, a subsidiary of 38 Studios. "On that foundation we built the open-world exploration, vast narrative and character customization fans expect from the best RPGs. And we've added something new that we've always wanted from the genre -- a fast-paced, graphically stimulating action combat experience with fluid control and immersive, discoverable gameplay fans haven't seen before in other fantasy RPGs."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will make its debut at the San Diego Comic-Con this week. In a panel scheduled for this Thursday at 1:15 PM (Pacific Time), Schilling, McFarlane, Rolston, and Salvatore will unveil the game (and its first trailer) to the world. More details will appear at the game's official website, ReckoningTheGame.com, after the announcement.

We'll have more soon.
