LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition

Written by Nicole Kline  on August 18, 2010

Special: Sack it to me!

LittleBigPlanet has been host to a plethora of cute, quirky, and creative DLC for nearly two years. Now, LittleBigPlanet 2 is looming on the horizon, much to the delighted anticipation of gamers worldwide. Media Molecule has already promised that all downloadable content from the first game will be usable in the second game. So what DLC should you absolutely have if you don't already own all of it?

It's not an easy decision to make with this huge list. So many will get left off, like the 2000 A.D. pack with Judge Dredd, the LocoRoco costume pack, the Chimera from Resistance, the Killzone mini-pack, and all the various freebies the team has released, including the Kabuki Actor costume and the Sacktue of Liberty. But I've managed to narrow it down to the 5 best DLC must-haves from LittleBigPlanet:

5) Marvel Level Pack

$4.99 for Level Kit, $5.99 for each Costume Kit

The world of LittleBigPlanet very easily loans itself to the creative stylings of the comic book world. The levels in the Marvel Pack Ц while initially feeling like one giant advertisement for Marvel (which technically I guess they are) Ц are vibrant and fun, making it seem as if Sackboy has been transported into his very own graphic novel where he is the hero. It was a little strange to beat the levels as Mystique, knowing I was a villain and having them all praise me as a hero, but it was cool nonetheless. The stickers and other items are all super fun as well Ц my pod is currently covered in clever sayings like BAMF! and also has little X-Men insignias all over it. The costumes are also very fun, and with four packs to choose from Ц each loaded with your favorite Marvel characters, including Ghost Rider and Doctor Octopus Ц you'll have a hard time picking just one.

4) Pirates of the Caribbean Premium Level Kit

$5.99 for Level Kit, $5.99 for Costume Pack

This was the most ambitious release Media Molecule has given us Ц not only does it have tons of stickers and other level-building material, but it also allows creators to use something LBP has never had before: water. This amazing level kit has changed the face of LBP and continues to expand the creative consciousness of the user-generated content. Not to mention the fun playable levels as well as the costumes in the pack, which include Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and my favorite, Davy Jones. Avast, ye mateys!

3) Watchmen Costume Pack - $5.99

With all the excitement of last year's movie, it's no wonder the Watchmen found their way into LittleBigPlanet. Sackboy can now save the day as Ozymandius, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl, or my favorite Ц Rorschach (Rorsack?). These incredibly detailed costumes bring me back to the first time I read the comic book. The only bad thing about this is that it's not a level kit. I hope the Marvel level kit ends up being a gateway to even more amazing creativity, including some Watchmen levels. I would definitely be on board for those. After all, who watches the Watchmen?

2) Metal Gear Solid Premium Character Pack/Metal Gear Solid Level Pack - $5.99 each

This was the beginning of the expansion and the first level kit Media Molecule releasedЕand remains the best one for me. This truly brought to life the stealthing nature of Solid Snake and gave rise to one of the coolest aspects of LBP Ц the Paintinator. This paintball gun brought hours of fun in and out of the Metal Gear Solid levels as other creators began to incorporate them into their levels as well. Add to that the ability to play as Meryl, Raiden, Screaming Mantis (with her now adorable hanging dolls), or Solid Snake himself, and this truly is one of the best things to come to LBP. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend getting the costume packs for Marvel or Pirates of the Caribbean Ц the real meat to those is in the level kits Ц with Metal Gear Solid, I would absolutely say that both levels and costumes are must-haves and are definitely worth the money.

1) Team ICO Pack Ц $5.99

This may seem anti-climactic to have my number one choice be a costume pack, but this isn't just any costume pack. This is a costume pack that transforms Sackboy into characters from two of the greatest video games ever made Ц Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. There are five costumes total Ц Ico and Yorda, obviously, as well as Wander and two of the Colossi, Gaius and Quadratus. Somehow Media Molecule has turned these hauntingly memorable characters into unforgettable costumes for Sackboy. If only Wander would say УAgro!Ф

While this list is obviously not comprehensive Ц I'd own all the DLC if it were up to me Ц this is the best of the best, narrowed down from the wonderland that is LittleBigPlanet. I am looking forward to November 16th, when I can step into a brand new adventure in LittleBigPlanet 2 as Ico, ready to save the day yet again.
