News: 12 year old me would have been all over this. 28 year old me is still excited with the possibility.

Hector Sanchez, a producer at NetherRealm Studios, has told CVG that he believes a Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter crossover is "inevitable."

While I'd love to believe that (I've been a Mortal Kombat fan ever since the first game performed a Fatality on arcades in 1992), Sanchez does recognize there are some hurdles in the way of gaming's greatest (hypothetical) crossover. He sensibly went on to say that any talk about the game's creation would "[depend] on the success of Street Fighter X Tekken."

The other major stumbling block standing in the way of a Capcom/NetherRealm pairing is the idea that Capcom wouldn't want the M-rated kombatants to mix with the T-rated world warriors. Or, as Sanchez put it, "I'm not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken's head off."

This isn't the first time someone at NetherRealm (nee Midway) has floated the idea of Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter. Back in 2008, Ed Boon himself revealed that he actually pitched the game to Capcom. The talks broke down, but it's great to know that the idea is still alive and well among the Mortal Kombat development team.

NetherRealm's next Mortal Kombat game, a series reboot simply titled Mortal Kombat, will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 next Spring.

Capcom has shown they're receptive to the crossover idea as the company has two in development: Street Fighter X Tekken and Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, which will compete head-to-head with Mortal Kombat on the PS3 and Xbox 360 next Spring.
