News: If the USPTO says no, will Nintendo reply "It's on like Donkey Kong"?
According to the Urban Dictionary, someone who tells you "It's on like Donkey Kong" is warning you that something is about to go down. Today, the great ape's creator has issued a warning to all of us: they plan to trademark "It's on like Donkey Kong."
The phrase first appeared as the opening line of Ice Cube's "Now I Gotta Wet'cha" in 1992. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon that was even used by one reporter to describe Australia's election season this past Summer.
Nintendo has filed a request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark, but it's currently unknown how they'll respond. Even with an endorsement from Mr. Cube that is nearly 20 years old, the publisher is claiming they created "It's on like Donkey Kong." Good luck with that Nintendo.
So why trademark it now? Well, Nintendo says they're doing it to honor Donkey Kong Country Returns, which is coming to the Wii on November 21.
And by "honor," I'm guessing they mean a bunch of commercials during The Big Bang Theory.
