A successor to PSP was announced by Sony at its PlayStation Meeting in Japan. Codenamed NGP, or Next-Generation Portable, the device will launch within the calendar year.
The device will support location based entertainment and converge real and virtual worlds via augmented reality, much like the Nintendo 3DS showed off recently with AR Games.
Earlier:
"Now the world of portable has undergone a huge change since the release of PSP" said Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Kaz Hirai at Tokyo's PlayStation Meeting. "When we released PSP, cell phone providers were unable to deliver PlayStation quality content. After 6 years, these multi-function handheld devices are ready for PlayStation-like experiences."
"The target platform of PS Suite is Android. We will also launch PlayStation Certified to perform content-quality testing in order to ensure PS quality across various devices."
