News: The Prey 2 release date is 2012 and Bethesda Softworks and Human Head Studios are behind this sequel.
Some people knew that the announcement for Prey 2 was imminent thanks to the leaked cover story of French gaming magazine Joystick. Of course, we knew a sequel was coming long before that, when Bethesda Softworks acquired the rights to Prey in 2009. Furthermore, we remember Scott Miller of 3D Realms semi-confirming work on Prey 2 back in 2006, saying in a Next-Gen.biz interview that he's been involved in "addressing concerns about combat, as well as adding in more gameplay innovations."
However, today, we got the official announcement from Bethesda Softworks on Prey 2 and the three systems on which it'll release in 2012: Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC. Since the original Prey was an Xbox 360- and PC-only game, this'll be the first time that PlayStation-fans will have a chance to check out the first-person shooter series.
"We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2," said Chris Rhinehart, project lead. "Prey 2 will provide gamers the opportunity to explore a new facet of the Prey universe, one that offers fast-paced action in an open, alien world. We're excited to show gamers the title we have been working on and hope they will be as excited by this title as we are."
There weren't any details attached to this mornings press release, but the publisher promised that more information will be revealed in the May issues of Official Xbox Magazine, PlayStation: The Official Magazine and magazines throughout Europe (Joystick among them). Bethesda Softworks also reassured Prey 1 fans that the original developer, Human Head Studios, is also creating Prey 2 and that the game "is being built on the cutting edge id tech engine from id Software."
We'll give you the skinny of what OXM and PtOM have to say about this 2012-bound game as soon as their May issues hit newsstands.
