News: PS3 gamers can relive the 3D movie in stereoscopic 3D, while Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and PC/Mac owners will have to settle for 2D.
With less than three months until its June 21 release date,
Cars 2: The Video Game is rounding its final laps at Avalanche Software. The Salt Lake City-based developer is making the movie-game for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Nintendo DS and computers, but Disney just announced that 3D support will be coming exclusively to PS3, pretty much confirming which version all 3D HDTV owners will be buying this summer.
On top of that, the game's 3D capabilities will extend to its four-player split-screen multiplayer. Sony's MotorStorm 3D Rift was the first game to include four-player split-screen in 3D, so this is still new territory for racing game developers.
"The advancement of 3D technology will allow us to immerse the player into the Cars 2 game environment in a whole new way," said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager of Avalanche Software, developer of Cars 2. "The 3D effects will ratchet up gameplay in ways that will have fans' hearts pounding when they embark on dangerous spy missions, while our innovative multiplayer with four simultaneous 3D ports will bring a whole new dimension to PS3 gaming."
The Disney-Pixar film from which this game is tied is set to release in 3D on June 22. So gamers may naturally opt for the 3D capable videogame on PS3 over the non-stereoscopic 2D versions on Xbox 360, Wii, the PC/Mac and the non-3DS Nintendo DS. Yes, the game will still be playable on a 3DS because the new system is backwards compatible with all regular DS games. Still, it won't pop out at you like the PS3 version.
