The PS4 is coming out in under a month in North America and will launch for $399. Earlier today Sony Brazil revealed what the PS4 will cost for our Brazilian readers and, well, it might be cheaper to fly to the US and purchase one instead of buying one in Brazil.
When the PS4 goes on sale in Brazil on November 29 it will cost 3,999 Brazilian Real. That means that the PS4 will be on sale in Brazil for approximately $1,850 US Dollars when it launches on November 29. Games will be available for 179 Brazilian Real which equates to approximately $83 US Dollars. It has long been known that consoles tend to be more expensive in different parts of the world but I don’t know if anyone could have guessed this amount. For comparisons sake, the Xbox One will launch in Brazil for the equivalent of $1,016 US Dollars. Doesn’t make that hundred dollar difference in North America seem like much, does it?
If you want to compare within the PlayStation ecosystem, the PS3 launched in Brazil in 2010 at $1,999 Brazilian Real, otherwise known as $924.69 US Dollars. The most obvious question that you are probably wondering about is why is the price for a PS4 so high in Brazil? According to G1, Sony Brazil said that “between 60 to 70 percent” of the price was due to import fees and taxes.
Meanwhile in other parts of South America, Argentina gamers will have to pay $1,100 USD for the PS4 and gamers in Chile will have to hand over $1,700 USD. While not as bad as Brazil it is still eye opening and, as I alluded to above, might actually be cheaper for some people to fly to the US to purchase this system and then take it home. According to Kotaku, the Xbox 360 is currently the most popular console in Brazil with an 85% market share. With the huge gap in price for next generation hardware one has to assume that it will be a similar story with Xbox One.
What do you think? Would any of our readers pay up to $1,850 dollars to have a PS4 on launch day?
