It is no secret that Nintendo and Microsoft have a relationship that is continuing to grow and strengthen. One of the first signs of that was during E3 when there was a Minecraft trailer played during Microsoft’s press conference that featured the Switch and they put out a commercial promoting cross-play between the two consoles. More recently there have been rumors flying around of Xbox Live itself going to Switch in some capacity, as well as Game Pass, and perhaps even some of the games like Ori and the Blind Forest. Another indication has just arrived with Microsoft’s streaming platform, Mixer.
If you go on to Mixer’s site now you will see that Nintendo games are part of the official list. For those who don’t know, when you are getting ready to stream on Mixer you can select the game you are going to stream from a list so it shows up on the service. For example, you can pick Forza Horizon 4 so that it shows up in the Forza Horizon 4 category on the service. When I was doing that this morning I noticed that there were a number of titles from The Legend of Zelda as well as a decent number of Mario titles on the list. Animal Crossing is also on the list, Splatoon 2 is on that list, Metroid is on that list, and more.
What does this mean exactly? We don’t really know at this moment. I have streamed Switch titles on Mixer before but I had to use an El Gato device to do it. With Nintendo games apparently getting official Mixer support now, does this mean the Switch will get a Mixer app so we can stream The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with just a few button presses, much like we can on Xbox with Red Dead Redemption 2? If this app is incoming, do you think we see it in the near future or do we have to wait until E3 for the reveal? With the games popping up on Mixer now, my guess is we will see something announced in the very near future.
What do you think of Nintendo games now appearing on the Mixer platform? If Switch does receive a Mixer app, will you use it to stream your next Super Mario Odyssey session or perhaps Yoshi’s Crafted World when it releases later this month? Tell us what you think below.
