Reviews: Embark on a journey and save your village in this new take on a strategy game where the keyboard is your greatest weapon.

”Touch

Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing is most likely the type of game that most haven’t played before and it just arrived on Steam earlier this month. If you find yourself in that group then you really need to download this game and give it a try. Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing combines elements of a strategy game with tactical typing. What this means is that to move a group of your troops forward all you have to do is type the word on the screen. It will be a random word. So, for example, if you want to send your troops north to engage in battle and you see the word “gamer” there in your path, all you have to do is type that correctly and your troops will head north.

Before you get to that point though you need to build up your troops. You start by mining gold that you can take back to your village, also accomplished by quickly and accurately typing words you see in the mine as you ride through it in a mine cart. Once you have some money you can hire some workers to collect it for you and bring it back to town. Once you have accumulated enough money in town you can start to build up your army by building barracks for soldiers to train, a place where archers can train, farms that will earn you extra income from their harvest, and so much more. It might sound strange to some people but it works really well. I’m a touch typist so typing the words quickly was the easiest part of me. The hardest part was the strategy portion, especially on the harder difficulty levels. There were times when the enemy would flank me and by the time I realized I made a mistake, it was too late. On the flip side if you choose the “easy” difficulty option, then you can concentrate more on having fun with the game and not have to worry too much about being quickly overrun by the enemy. If you don’t pay attention you can absolutely still lose, even on the easiest difficulty, but it isn’t quite as stressful. For those who can fly on the keyboard and are familiar with strategy games, you might want to try Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing on the harder difficulty levels. For those whose fingers might not be as nimble on a keyboard, starting out on the easier difficulty levels until you feel comfortable with more of a challenge. Whichever route you decide to take Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing is a fun experience and a breath of fresh air compared with some of the other games I normally play.

Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing has a number of different modes for you to enjoy. There is the campaign mode where you go through the story as a guy named Paul. It becomes his job to save the day and he does so by using a magical typewriter. He will have to help villages fend off raiders and other assorted characters that might want to take over and destroy otherwise innocent villages. Some of the different objectives include simply defending the village while others send you more on the offensive and it becomes your job to capture the enemy camp. Yet another objective might be trying to get as much gold as possible and get it back to your home base before the enemy can try to stop you. It is a fun light hearted experience with a decent challenge that I really enjoyed. For those on the fence, there is a free demo that you can try and download as well to see if this is the experience for you.

For those who want to experience some multiplayer action with Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing, that option is available as well. You can choose to do a Private Lobby if you want to play with friends or simply try to find a random match. You can determine how the matchmaking works and even allow the game to pair you with those who are playing the demo, which is a really great idea. There is also a skirmish mode where you can engage with other players to try and see who is the king of the keyboard. You will compete against a global leaderboard with a good number of levels to choose from. The standard multiplayer suite also features the same levels.

The way that you approach each level and each battle is solely up to you. My strategy was that I would build some barracks first and potentially a building for my archers to train as well. As soon as I could I would build a farm so that I could be making money all day, every day. There are a few different soldier types to choose from such as a Swordsman, a Spearman, the Cavalry, and more. Once you meet the requirements and also have enough money, there are special units that can be used as well. I really liked to use the catapult that would fire on enemy units from a distance. There is also a bit of a trojan horse with the Sodmorran Horse that will allow three of your Swordsmen units to infiltrate their destination. There is enough depth here where casual players shouldn’t feel too overwhelmed while experienced players can turn up the difficulty level to see if they can survive. Another form of combat in the game involves spells. Three are available at the beginning of every match with four other ones available to be unlocked once you build an Ink Factory. You can help generate ink for these spells by typing quickly and accurately. If you type a word wrong you will see the ink level drop down just a bit but it is really easy to quickly get it back. Some of the spells include the Root Spell, Plague, and Summon Unit. Each spell will cost a certain number of Ink bars so it is important that you keep your ink level as high as possible at all times to make sure you have those bars to cast the spells you need. I really enjoyed the Teleport spell myself and I can type quickly enough to where if I made a mistake and my ink dropped that I could recover within a few seconds. You can also strategize by only sending parts of your unit to different areas. So, for example, if you need troops in the North and in the East, you can send half of them North and half of them East. This is a great potential way to flank the enemy, which will allow you to cause more damage. It was a strategy that I employed many times and had a lot of success with it.

Overall, Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing is a really fun experience. I’ve been trying to get some more experience with these typing games and the creativity level from the developers is fun to see. I wouldn’t have thought about making one of these titles into a strategy game but it works really well, regardless of your typing skills. Obviously if you are a touch typist you might have a bit of an easier time at first but this could potentially help improve your skills if you are more of a novice as well. If you are curious but aren’t quite sure, remember there is a demo that you can download to check out. If you are looking for a different type of game to play this holiday season though, I highly recommend Touch Type Tale - Strategic Typing.
