First Impressions: The golden age of videogames.

Midway is one of the companies that built the US gaming industry. People lined up to play their games and many a quarter was spent in pursuit of the elusive high score. Even now, in the dying days of the video arcade, Midway is still turning out high-quality interactive entertainment. Those of you that have played their recent releases of Gauntlet Legends, Spy Hunter, and Defender know what Midway can do when you cross a classic idea and current technology. But what of the original games that the company was built on? Well, this holiday season you can play all of their great games of yesteryear when Midway Arcade Treasures.

You might be thinking, "What games will Midway Arcade Treasures allow us to play?" The better question might be, "What games won't it?" Think back to every arcade game that you can remember playing during the 1980's. Just about every one that wore the Midway moniker is included in this package for all of your gaming pleasure. In addition to the classics that have inspired some of their modern-day hits, Midway is bringing us Smash TV, Moon Patrol, Joust, Toobin', and 720. Do you really need me to go on?

In this day and age, no collection of anything classic can be released without at least a few extra goodies. Midway Arcade Treasures is no exception as we will also be treated to hours of DVD content. Expect creator and developer interviews to fill the disc, similar to how Midway complimented last year's Defender. Also, count on game histories and, for all of you audiophiles, a taste of 1980s music. While none of these extras are really necessary (I mean, the gameplay alone will carry this title), it is a nice offering to the faithful fans that have waited patiently for this collection.

Final Thoughts
As long as the controls translate well, this compilation will kick some serious butt. This is going to be the most comprehensive collection of classic arcade titles ever released, and it isn't going to be just junk titles that no one remembers. Smash TV alone would be worth the $19.99 price tag, and we're being treated to an additional 19 classics. Anyone that remembers game arcades of the 1980's will want this game for Christmas and the rest of you should pick it up to learn what real gaming is all about.
