Pokemovie: Steve was the editor we forced to see the Pokemon movie and sit with one million screaming 8 year olds, looking more or less like a child molester in a crowd of children!
Mush reviews it As Your Dad...
Pikachu, Pikachu, Pikachu, what do you do with all of that money? Well Pokemon The first Movie has premiered and I expect Pikachu to die drowning in an ocean of bills. Don't roll your eyes; you know you're going to see it as soon as you finish reading. As your father, I went to see it first, that way I can tell you if it is suitable. Your father's word is FINAL, DO YOU HEAR ME? HEY LOOK AT ME WHEN I TALK YOU!
The Graphics of the movieЕuhh, oh I mean the Animation and Special Effects of the movie are swell. Its just like Pokemon the show, but every once in a while a CG background is used. Also, when Mewtwo fights he gets a neat little aura around him. Want to know more? It's drawn in anime style, due to a rumor that Pokemon
is in fact Japanese.
There are 2 features in the movie. For the first 20 or so minutes there is a short film entitled Pikachu's Vacation, then the rest is Mewtwo Strikes Back.
Pikachu's Vacation has no story other than the Pokemon from the show playing with other Pokemon creatures and getting into their usual mischief. Although new Pokemon from Gold/Silver are introduced, such as Marril and Snubble, the whole ordeal left me quite annoyed most of the time and I seem to recall wishing that it would end just to see Mewtwo Strikes Back.
Well at least MSB is good. The story is as follows Mewtwo awakens in a lab where scientists surround him and doesn't want to be an experiment so he goes berserk. He is then confronted by Giovanni, who he sides with to destroy humanity, and then learns that Giovanni doesn't care about him as an equal so he rebuilds his lab on an island. He then invites the best trainers to come to his island and fight him. His real intentions are to capture and clone the creatures of the trainer's Pokemon and use the clones to serve him. Stuff happens, pimp smacks are dealt, battles ignite, but I wont tell you more so I spoil don't spoil anything. How sweet of your dad. Indeed.
Another problem I had with it was music. I didn't expect to hear anything good, but this music is like the series' music, only remixed. As you can imagine, this sounds incredibly retarded, and when the Pokmeon and the clones battle, there is a nice little cheerful song playing in the background. So, while Mewtwo starts blasting Mew, and the clones start gnawing their true counterparts, you hear "There goes my brother " etc. etc. I would have much preferred the opening theme.
Evidently people thought it was exciting, namely the children, who of course the movie was intended for, so it didn't really surprise me. OK, so I was surprised when Mewtwo had a scientist roast. The morals of the movie are pretty lame and of all people to say it, it was Meowth who gave the speech of living in harmony and such. Quite disturbing.
Overall, I liked this movie despite my previous gripes. It was darker than you would expect from Pokemon, and the release of the film will attract new fans, shed some light on parents, and, of course, make a lot of money. It's Pokemon fever! Catch it!
