First Impressions: A unique twist visits the Bond franchise.

No gamer in their right mind will argue against the fact that GoldenEye is the granddaddy of all console first-person-shooters. As one of the best selling titles for the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye taught the world how to make an fps work as a console-based videogame. Heck, I still pull GoldenEye out when I need a good multi-player fix.

Gameplay details are still scarce for Goldeneye 2, but Electronic Arts has slipped a few details about the game's premise into the media stream. As a departure for games involving Ian Fleming's James Bond, you will not be playing as James. You will actually be taking the role of an agent that was dismissed from MI6 for being excessively brutal. So, what does a former secret agent do? He decides to take over the world, that's what. As you progress through GE2 you will be taking steps towards becoming the ultimate Bond villain. My question is, "What scheme will we be using to take over the world?" Under the tutelage of Auric Goldfinger, you can bet it is going to be a doozie.

With the success of the original GoldenEye's multi-player mayhem, we can expect that GoldenEye 2 will be chock full of split screen goodness. Four-player action is all but a guarantee for Xbox and GameCube versions of the title while this editor wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the editions features network support to some degree.

There is one puzzler surrounding GoldenEye 2. Why is it that Free Radical isn't developing the title for EA? Putting Free Radical at the helm would have made perfect sense considering that many of the FR team were with the Rare team that developed the original GE. However, just because Free Radical isn't at the helm does not mean that EA is leaving the game in inexperienced hands. In fact, Gamespot.com has recently reported that a former member of Bungie's Halo: Combat Evolved team, Dan Orzulak, is working with the EALA team to make GE2 shine. Their source also indicated that Takayoshi Sato, the character artist of Silent Hill 2 fame, has been on the project since February of 2003.

Final Thoughts
There is good reason to be looking forward to GoldenEye 2. Not only is the game being handled by some of the best talent in the industry, but it is the only true sequel to the seminal console fps from the N64. You can almost guarantee that this game is going to be the shiznit when it comes to multi-player action but we can only hope that EA will grace the GameCube with some kind of network compatibility. Either way, I look forward to taking down James Bond. (I'm just soooo tired of him getting all of the women.)
