Future Tactics: The Uprising

Written by Ryan Smotherman  on April 27, 2004

Final Preview: Saving the world, one extra dimensional creature at a time.

Budget games. What can we say about them? Well, most would use adjectives such as sucky, crappy, trashy, junky, etcЕ Basically, they're usually not very good and only appeal to those who have a major cash flow problem, those who are tight with their money, or those who just want to see how bad a videogame can truly be (these budget titles are some of the worst around). Latest of the bunch is Crave's multi-platform release, Future Tactics: The Uprising -- a combination action/role-playing title that promises tons of action for very little dough.

Future Tactics takes place in the not-so-distant future, in a time when extra dimensional creatures are on the verge of taking control of Earth. But not so fast. You, playing the role as a young boy named Low, will team up with your sister and slew of different fighters to save the Earth from their reign.

The meat of the title's gameplay focuses on turn-based RPG inspired elements. Here you'll take Low and his fellow acquaintances into battle in the 19 single-player missions found within the game; killing the evil creatures, all the while earning experience points to upgrade your characters. Though, Crave is quick to point out that the game focuses solely on action, leaving the RPG elements to a bare minimum. During the action a fully destructible environments is at your disposal. So knocking down walls, putting craters within the earth, or chucking huge boulders is all possible.

Visually, Future Tactics looks to be up to the budget title standard, which isn't exactly a good thing. Environments are clean and colorful, but noticeably lacking in any high level of details. To be fair the 18 playable characters, along with the creatures you'll face, do have a unique look to them, making for a good array of different personalities to contend with. The game's story will move along with fully animated and voiced scenes, hopefully giving something interesting to checkout between missions.

Final Thoughts
Set to debut in early May at the low, low price of $14.99, it'll be interesting to see how this one turns out. It's an RPG that puts more emphasis on action that character building, which along with the low price tag should give it a broader appeal. Then you have a decent number of single player missions and a full-blown 2-player battle mode that, if the title's gameplay turns out pretty decent, could offer plenty of bang for your buck. Look for a review soon.
