News: Midway announces Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, the first annual Mortal Kombat release.
Midway has announced that they have begun work on the next Mortal Kombat game, but it's not what you think.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will be an acton/adventure beat 'em up in the Mortal Kombat universe. Shaolin Monks will be the first non-fighting entry in the series since 2000's Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. Shaolin Monks will also be the first in a series of annual releases in the Mortal Kombat universe when it ships for the PS2 and Xbox in Fall 2005.
Shaolin Monks will take many cues from the latest MK, Decetption, with interactive environments and multiple new fatalities. Shaolin Monks will also include "action puzzle solving" sections and multiplayer modes. Not much else is known about the game, but we do know that many former Mortal Kombatants will make appearances and that Shaolin Monks will attempt to explore the Mortal Kombat mythos much like the Mortal Kombat RPG, MK Myhologies: Sub-Zero, tried too.
"Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title that will help to expand the already wildly popular Mortal Kombat universe well beyond the fighting genre," said David F. Zucker, president and chief executive officer. "Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year. We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually."
We'll have more as it becomes available.
