First Impressions: My Juju is better than your Juju

Everyone's favorite member of the Pupanunu tribe, Tak, is coming back for his third adventure. Tak: The Great Juju Challenge will bring hours of exciting action, however, this time the tables have turned. Tak and his buddy Lok will represent their Pupanunu tribe in the famous Juju Challenge, an intertribal competition that takes place every six decades. The third installment of this series is going to feature more of the puzzles, action and challenges that fans of Tak and the Power of Juju and Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams enjoyed, although the gameplay mechanics are about to undergo a major change.

One of the biggest changes to the traditional Tak gameplay is that the nine stages featured in this installment will be timed. Players will still face plenty of obstacles, enemies and challenges, but making quick decisions will be necessary to complete Tak: The Great Juju Challenge. These levels can also be replayed upon completion to improve your high score, which should lead the way for high replay value.

The main difference between The Great Juju Challenge and previous installments is that Tak and Lok will be together virtually all of the time. Fans of Seinfeld and Family Guy will also be interested by the fact that Lok is voiced by Patrick Warburton, famous for his role as David Puddy in Seinfeld and his voice-over for Joe Swanson in Family Guy. In single-player mode, one of the two will be controlled by the AI, but a second human player can jump in (or leave) at any time for some split-screen fun. Both characters have special abilities, however they must work cooperatively to solve many of the puzzles. Tak is quite the magician (with the aid of a few potions) and is a good swimmer while Lok is more brutish and has the ability to climb walls. This will lead to quite a number of puzzles involving both of their talents. One example involves Lok climbing a wall while enemies are trying to hinder his progress. This means Tak will man a cannon to clear the way for Lok. Such puzzles will be abundant in The Great Juju Challenge and having the option of playing as either Tak or Lok at all times is certainly appealing.

But the fun isn't going to stop there, as The Great Juju Challenge will also feature four derby levels. In these levels, Tak and Lok will be pitted in an arena with rival tribesmen, smashing as many cars as possible to earn the most points in the order of the day. Although these levels are short in duration, they are bound to be a smashing success. Another addition is more animals, a staple of the series. A Lok-loving gorilla, a baby rhinoceros and a fire-fighting mammoth are being added to the list of animals that help Tak along the way.

Final Thoughts
Tak: The Great Juju Challenge is bound to be a solid continuation of the Tak series. Although some of the emphasis on the platforming sequences that made the series popular in the first place will be lessened, the new gameplay mechanics should shake things up a bit.
