News: Ubisoft confirms the newest Splinter Cell subtitle.

After a few weeks of speculation, Ubisoft has confirmed that Splinter Cell 4 will officially be known as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent. The game is on track for a spring release for the PC, PS2, Xbox, GameCube and, even though it wasn't listed on Ubisoft's Q1 release schedule, the Xbox 360.

Double Agent puts Sam Fisher in the shoes of (wait for it) a double agent working for both the NSA and an evil terrorist organization. Thsi time, Sam will have two objectives in each missions: one for the terrorist group and a countermission for the NSA. Players will now have to be concerned that too much killing will blow their cover, but not enough may not get the NSA mission done, or worse, result in a horrible terrorist attack.

Double Agent is being brought together by a collabrotive effort between Ubisoft teams in Montreal (developers of Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory), Shanghai (developer of Pandora Tomorrow)and France. And Ubisoft has some big plans for the game:

  • Dual objectives to fulfill: NSA government agents and terrorists will each want you to accomplish opposing tasks at the same time.
  • Discover the tension of being a double agent: Use actual tactics employed by today's real-life double agents to sabotage the terrorists' plans.
  • Explore a branching storyline with multiple endings: Your choices have an impact on how the story and game play unfolds.
  • A world of international espionage: Missions from all over the world, from Asia to Africa to the heart of the US. Experience extreme situations: underwater or in a sandstorm, hiding behind the dust or smoke - and even skydiving.
  • New authentic gadgets: Master the latest weapons and gadgets used by NSA government agents in addition to black-market terrorist weapons.
  • Innovative online play: The critically acclaimed multiplayer action of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is back with entirely new innovations for each platform.

Ubisoft plans to unveil Double Agent to the world with an exclusive preview in this month's issue of Game Informer, which hits newsstands December 22.
