News: David Fincher's incredible movie is being turned into a brawler by VU Games. We've got the first screens as well.
Vivendi Universal shocked everyone today when they announced they will be publishing a game based on Fight Club for the PS2 and Xbox. Genuine Games, a relatively new development house with no previous titles under their belt, has been given the task of creating a game out of the mayhem. While no real details have been revealed yet, except for this cryptic passage on the Vivendi Universal game page:
Learn the 8 Rules of Fight Club.
In the underground world of Fight Club, the fight isn't over until someone goes limp, taps out, or is beaten. Immerse yourself in this gritty, visceral world of bare-knuckle fighting, with action, story elements and environments true to the Fight Club movie. The extreme realism of the game will make you feel every punch and kick by delivering shocking visuals, untraditional moves, and special effects in fully interactive environments.
All we really know for sure is that Tyler and Jack "The Narrator" are the only two confirmed characters. But Luc Vanhal, VU Games' President, did say that "Fight Club is set to deliver a fighting game that will portray the experience of a realistic fighter that incorporates many elements from the Fight Club movie. Genuine Games has stepped up to the plate to develop a fighting game that will capture the raw intensity of street fighting that will appeal to movie fans, hardcore fighting game fans and casual gamers alike."
The game is currently on track for a Fall 2004 release date and if you want the first screens, check them out right here.
I'll leave it to someone else to decide whether producing a video game out of a book and movie that denouncs capitalism and materialism will create some sort of black hole of irony that will suck in all of mankind.
