News: Acclaim's fire sale comes to a close as Throwback purchases most of Acclaim's back catalog.
Throwback Entertainment, a publisher operating out of Toronto, Canada, has announced they have acquired the rights to many of Acclaim's former properties.
The long-time publisher went bankrpupt in 2004 and since then several of their titles, including Juiced and The Red Star, have been snapped up by other publishing houses. But today, in one fell swoop, Throwback has brought a lot of beloved (and forgotten) titles back into the spotlight.
Throwback's deal includes dozens of titles spanning almost every conceivable platform including NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PSone, Nintendo 64, PS2, GameCube and Xbox.
Most of the titles include re-release and sequel rights, as Throwback CEO Thomas Maduri explains:
УAcclaim Entertainment was responsible for the creation of some wonderful original games, and unfortunately couldn't see them through their lifecycle. We are very pleased to have been afforded the opportunity to take these titles through the next generation, and onwards. Many of the titles have all the elements required to establish franchises, with new services broadening the reach of games, Throwback will be well positioned for the expansion of the franchises.Ф
Some titles in the deal include only console specific re-release rights and since most of those platforms have long been abandoned Throwback may be looking to cash in on the Wii's Virtual Console.
Some of the highlighted games/series include:
Extreme G Racing (N64, PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC)
Legends of Wrestling (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, GBA)
Vexx (PS2, Xbox, GameCube)
Aggressive Inline (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, GBA)
Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC)
Summer Heat Volleyball (PS2)
A full listing of all of the titles that Throwback acquired can be found at their website.
We'll have more when we eventually find out what Throwback has planned for these titles.
