As you can see, the three lists are further subdivided into Released, Unreleased, and Non-US games. Among unreleased games the three consoles are pretty close, with the Xbox 360 leading with 43, followed closely by the PS3 (39) and the Wii (35). It was the 360's one year head start that has really filled its exclusive pile (with 25 titles), as no doubt many of its exclusives would have gone multiplatform if there were more than one next-gen system available at the time.

The 360 has made its mark thanks to Microsoft's PC/Xbox 360 initiative. By making PC to Xbox 360 porting easy, Microsoft can expose console gamers to genres and titles they might never have considered before while still building on distinctly console-based titles like the PGR series, Ninety-Nine Nights and Dead or Alive 4.

It's also important not to forget games only coming to Japan in this race. While it is the hardest part of the list to keep updated, the PS3 and Xbox 360 each have seven Japanese-only exclusives, while the Wii has a whopping 18. What does this mean for American gamers? Well, great success in Japan might lead to a company taking a chance on a previously Japanese-only series in America (for example: Katamari Damacy, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, etc).

Of course, as Silconera themselves mentioned, the unique control scheme of the Wii essentially makes every game an exclusive. But that might be an unfair advantage for this list. Plus, I imagine third-parties will eventually make use of the Classic Controller for more standard game playing.

It's also important to note that exclusivity is a fluid thing. Up until a few weeks ago, The Elder Scrolls IV was exclusive to the Xbox 360 and Assassin's Creed was exclusive to the PS3. How long will it be before games like Mercenaries 2, L.A. Noire or Castle Wolfenstein start two-timing their exclusive partners? Then there's the constant rumors of games being dropped from one console for exclusivity on another. I don't know how many times I've heard УResident Evil 5 will only come to the Xbox 360!Ф Then the next day I hear УResident Evil 5 will only come to the PS3!Ф For a game that's really far away (and still officially coming to both), we'll probably be hearing these rumors forever.

And to that end, I hope to make this a living document that can be updated every once in a while. The real test of a list like this is what it looks like a year or two years from now. What will it look like at the end of the next generation? As I said, that's the real test. Because as we all know, the PS2 is the undisputed king of exclusives this generation and, while I haven't run the numbers, it will definitely have see more exclusive games in 2006 than all three next-gen consoles combined. It remains to be seen if any console that dominate like that ever again. This generation is going to be fun.
