News: A very big month indeed.
The NPD Group has released their sales data for the month of November and it appears that the video game industry had a very good month.
With the PlayStation 3 and the Wii launching near the tail end of the month, the top spots for the month belonged to the DS, GBA, PS2 and Xbox 360. According to NPD, in November, the DS sold 918,000 units. Second place was a battle between the PS2 and GBA with the PS2 selling 664,000 and the GBA gaining 661,000 new owners. The PSP also made a respectable showing with sales of 412,000 units.
With the PS3 and Wii in the picture, the next-gen race has finally begun and the Xbox 360 is leading the charge with 511,000 systems sold. The Wii came in next at 476,000 and the PS3 rounded out the list at 197,000 systems sold, or less than half Sony's original projection.
A few new games also shot out of the gate in a big way in November. Here's the top four:
1. Gears of War (Xbox 360) - 1,000,000
2. Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - 896,000
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) - 412,000
4. Guitar Hero II (PS2) 356,000
For those keeping track at home, that means 87% of all Wii owners also purchased a copy of Zelda. That is unprecedented.
We'll have more on the new systems and the big sellers soon.
