News: SCEA names some updates as part of the download, but web sites report it doing more.
Sony made available the latest patch for PlayStation 3 Wednesday, but did not officially announce the most noteworthy fix being reported by sites like Kotaku.
According to Sony, firmware version 1.5 enables customized user icons from photos, backup data to be deleted, Korean text via the on-screen keyboard, and keytone sounds to be turned on and off. It also gives PlayStation Network account holders a choice of either auto-sign-in when the console is initially turned on or just saving the password to do it manually.
More interesting than these so-so additions to PS3's options menu are the backwards compatibility fixes found by Kotaku. Michael McWhertor discovered that PSOne and PS2 games no longer contain visual glitches when running over a normal, non-progress scan mode.
Directions on how to apply firmware 1.5 are available at the bottom of the PS3 System Software Update page.
PlayStation Store update
Along with the firmware release, Sony added the official trailer for Gran Turismo HD Concept (even though the demo can be downloaded), and new trailers for upcoming Warner Bros. movies.
