News: Why? Because Tetsuya Nomura says so, that's why.
PlayStaton Universe is reporting that an interview with Final Fantasy head honcho Tetsuya Nomura in the latest issue of Famitsu confirms that Final Fantasy XIII has been pushed back into 2008. Final Fantasy XIII, the first next-gen entry in the series and the first in a series of games based around the Fabula Nova Crystallis concept, was tentatively scheduled for a 2007 release date.
This new release date is presumedly for the Japanese release only and an American release date will no doubt be even further out than that.
However, a bit of good news has also surfaced as the same interview states a demo of the game will likely materialize sometime this year.
Even a little Final Fantasy is better than no Final Fantasy.
UPDATE: Joystiq is now saying that this is all a big misunderstanding and that Final Fantasy XIII has no "official" release date. According to Joystiq, what Nomura actually said was "We're planning to have the final in-game graphics prepared at some point during 2007, so please wait for that -- and then we can speak about Versus XIII in more detail."
So it seems like it's safe to ignore all of this hullabaloo, but I think the 2008 release date is a safe bet.
