News: The multiplatform title will be powered by Unreal Engine 3.
The board members of the world's crazist game forum, NeoGAF, have snagged an early copy of the June 2007 issue of Game Informer and they've uncovered a doozy: First details of The Last Remnant, Square-Enix's new role playing game.
The Last Remnant will be unique in many ways. For one, Game Informer states the game will be coming to "next-generation consoles." That's right, the PS3 and/or the Xbox 360 and/or the Wii. Although GI does say they think the Wii will not be receiving The Last Remnant.
Second, the game will be created using Unreal Engine 3 and it will come out in Japan and America at the same time. This is the first time that will happen with a S-E RPG, and it likely has something to do with the characters in the game.
The Last Remnant will star Rush Sykes, an 18-year old, swordwielding, pretty boy (AKA, the character meant to appeal to Japanese gamers). He will be partnered with "The Conqueror", a battle hardened warrior who wears blood-stained clothing all the time (AKA, the character meant to appeal to American gamers).
The Last Remnant will also feature mystical objects known as remnants. These magic trinkets can take the shape of anything (including a giant sword or a person) and will bestow various powers on characters throughout the game.
The game will be a turn-based affair with quick time event button presses thrown in to keep players on their toes. GI has also said the battles will take place between up to 70 characters (the player's party will hold up to five people) that will belong to one of four races: Mitra (humans), Yama (giant fish), Qsiti (humanoid lizards) and Sovanni (four armed cat things).
The Last Remnant will be directed Hiroshi Takai (The Bouncer) with cinematic scenes by Kouzi Kobayashi (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within). When we know more (including what platforms this very interesting game is coming to), we'll let you know.
