Trivia: Contra (NES)
Popularized the Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, A, Start). Because of this it has been mistakenly referred to as the Contra Code and because of this it was assumed to be the first game to use the code.
In Japan, the Contra story has always taken place in the future (the year 2633 to be exact). For the American release the story was rewritten to take place in the present day (1987).
The timeframe of the events in Contra has been shifted to the future to match the Japanese continuity according to the official Contra timeline included with Contra: Shattered Soldier.
The main characters are known as Bill (Player 1) and Lance (Player 2) in Japan. In the US version, Bill became "Mad Dog" and Lance became "Scorpion".
Contra's boxart features Bill and Lance in poses very similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator and Sylvester Stallone as Rambo.
In Europe the game was released under the title Probotector and all of the human characters were changed to robots.
