News: PS2 version announced for Europe, ten new songs for all.
Harmonix has used the Leipzig Games Convention to announce that Rock Band will be making it's way to the PS2 in early 2008 in addition to the previously announced Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Sadly, this announcement only applies to European territories, but I'm sure an American release date will be revealed shortly.
The PlayStation 2 version will be similar to it's next-gen counterparts and include many of the same game modes. Which modes are on the chopping block are unknown, but Harmonix did say the PS2 version would feature "new game elements" to compensate for it. Songs from European-based bands will also be included in the European release of Rock Band on the disc and as downloadable content.
The company has also gone ahead and announced ten new songs that will be included in all of the versions of Rock Band. Each song will feature the original master track and they are:
Rolling Stones УGimme ShelterФ Deep Purple "Highway Star"
The Clash УShould I Stay or Should I GoФ
Faith No More "EpicФ
Smashing Pumpkins УCherub RockФ Radiohead УCreepФ
Beastie Boys УSabotageФ
Jet УAre You Gonna Be My GirlФ OK Go УHere It Goes AgainФ
Nine Inch Nails УThe Hand That FeedsФ
For the record, "Cherub Rock" and "Sabotage" were preivously announced for inclusion in Guitar Hero III, so there might be a more direct comparison between these two musical melody makers in the future.
The battle of the bands will heat up this fall and we'll have more on all the upcoming music games soon.
