News: Derek Jeter has been dethroned.

2K Sports has announced that New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes will be the cover athlete for Major League Baseball 2K8. The game will be released next Spring for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PSP.

This marks the first time since 2004 that Derek Jeter will not be on the cover. Before the MLB 2K series, Jeter appeared on six covers for the All-Star Baseball series. Unless he is chosen as the cover athlete for Sony's MLB 08, it will be the first time in nine years he won't appear on the cover of a new video game.

"This is the first time I have ever been on the cover of a video game and it is very exciting to be a part of the best video game out there," said Jose Reyes.

Nothing was revealed about the game itself, but I'm just thrilled a New York Met gets to play cover boy. After their stretch at the end of last season, they need some good news.

We'll have more on Major League Baseball 2K8 soon.
