Special: We begin our weeklong look at our 52 favorite games of 2007.
Crackdown
Platform: Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Realtime Worlds
Release Date: February 20, 2007
David Jones, Crackdown's creator, does not want people comparing his latest baby to Grand Theft Auto, another game he had a hand in creating. Instead, he wants people to focus on the car-throwing, building-leaping, city-destroying, action-movie-on-crack feel of Crackdown. And whether you consider the Halo 3 beta or not, Crackdown delivered on all those things. - John Scalzo
DIRT
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Publisher: Codemasters
Developer: Codemasters
Release Date: June 19, 2007
"DIRT is refreshingly different from its counterparts, which is what makes it such a blast to play; it manages to blend realism with arcade style gameplay. Everything looks fantastic, from the amazing tracks to the way the vehicles shine. Then DIRT's arcadey roots show when you put the game to the test. Combining realistic graphics Ц on par with MotorStorm, no less Ц with realistic yet arcadey gameplay, you really can't go amiss with this awesome release." - Ashley Coomer

Folklore
Platform: PlayStation 3
Publisher: SCEA
Developer: Game Republic
Release Date: October 9, 2007
"Some may find the gameplay is a touch repetitive and the story a bit slow to unravel, but those who do stick around get to see a beautiful, fun game mixed in with a plot that's full of twists and turns, many of which are pleasantly surprising. With the mass of games hitting PS3 this fall it's easy to ignore a game like Folklore, but if you're at all interested in kooky action games with an RPG twist and love a story that plays out like a good book, you should definitely give the game a shot." - Adam Woolcott

Formula One Championship Edition
Platform: PlayStation 3
Publisher: SCEA
Developer: Sony Studio Liverpool
Release Date: February 27, 2007
"Formula One Championship Edition is the one and only next-generation console title for the high-speed motorsport. Followers of F1 can't turn anywhere else because there hasn't been any competition ever since Sony snagged the official license. Regardless, no one should feel forced to buy this game just because it's the only on out there. Formula One Championship Edition's high-definition graphics, intense sense of speed and ability to be appeal to rookie and veterans alike makes me happy that the franchise finally reappeared in North America." - Matt Swider

Forza Motorsport 2
Platform: Xbox 360
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Turn 10
Release Date: May 29, 2007
"Forza Motorsport 2 had to do a lot to achieve its predecessor's own lofty accolades, and this entry certainly has all the right moves to match and Ц in some respects Ц surpass what the original Forza did. The driving is decidedly simulation, to be sure, but the precision of the control and subtlety of the assists make this game accessible to those with even a passing interest in real-world racers. Add to that the amazing car selection, customization options, upgraded decal/painting engine, auction house and smooth online play, and you've got Forza making its case (once again) for being one of the best in the business." - Glenn Wigmore

Heavy Weapon
Platform: Xbox Live Arcade
Publisher: PopCap Games
Developer: PopCap Games
Release Date: January 17, 2007
"Heavy Weapon takes the cigar-chomping Rambo of your typical side-scrolling shooter and shoves him inside a tankЕ an Atomic Tank. Yes, the year is 1984 and the Reds are threatening war, so the US does the only thing a nuclear power can do, they send the Fat Man in a big tank to drop the Little Boy on those Ruskies. Heavy Weapon is a simplistic shooter that is charming precisely for its simplicity." - John Scalzo
